April 04 How I started and who inspired meFirst discovered lifting weights. I was introduced to weight lifting first in 1984 when I first joined a local gym. I was lucky enough to have a guy who was very well versed in weight training take me for my first program. I still have my first program card; it included free weight squats, incline dumbbell press and numerous other exercises. Far from the normal program dished out for girls. Kevin told me not to be afraid of lifting as much weight as possible; he said I wouldn't get big. I recently caught up with Kevin, introduced myself and told everyone that he was the person who got me into weight training, he is very proud of me. Kevin didn't think I would be still training 18 years later. Women who inspired me. Juliette Bergman - I read everything on her and just loved her complete package, her shape and perfect proportions. Carla Dunlap for her back development Cory Everson - femininity and her magical posing ability. Lisa Campbell (Australian) who had incredible development ahead of her time.
Then in 1993 I met Joanne Lee an English girl who was over here in Queensland training, I had never seen such a strong, hard training and woman of her size before, Jo was 20 kilos heavier than me and was just so inspirational. (Jo competed in the 1995 Miss O). Jo was always pleasant and friendly to everyone she met, the way she handled herself in public was something that I always have strive to emulate. Spending time with her was a great inspiration.
Other sports
I started ballet at the age of 5yrs and continued for 15years. Tried numerous other things like cricket, tae kwon doe, snow skiing, motor bike riding, roller-skating and rowing. But I became hooked on weight training as soon as I started. I seem to prefer a individual sport where I am competing against myself and not really into team sports, that way I only have myself to blame when things go bad.
My first competition.
Introduction to competition was actually via the Police Force in 1989, when I met Powerlifting great Leigh Wisbey, I became the first woman to ever compete in powerlifting in the Victorian Police force games.
I never really thought of competing in bodybuilding until I was approached by the owner of a supplement company, who offered me sponsorship and encouraged me to enter my first competition.
Thus in 1991 at IFBB Melbourne titles I came second and won the posing routine award. I love the free posing round as I get to use my ballet background; it's the fun part.
